Are you and your dog ready for the 4th of July?

Hey everyone!

With July 4th just around the corner, I wanted to share some important tips to keep our furry friends safe and comfortable during the celebrations. While we enjoy the festivities, it's crucial to remember that fireworks, loud noises, and large gatherings can be stressful and even dangerous for our pets. Here are some tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday for everyone:

Create a Safe Space

Set up a quiet, comfortable area in your home where your pet can retreat from the noise. This could be a room with familiar items like their bed, toys, and water. Playing calming music or white noise can help drown out the sound of fireworks.

Keep Pets Indoors

Even if your pet is usually fine outside, fireworks can startle them and cause them to run away. Make sure your pets are inside well before the fireworks start. Close windows and doors to minimize the noise, and draw curtains to reduce the visual impact of the fireworks.

Update Identification

Ensure your pets have up-to-date ID tags and are microchipped with current contact information. In case they do get scared and run off, this increases the chances of a quick and safe return.

Avoid Human Food

July 4th celebrations often involve barbecues and picnics. Keep an eye on what your pet is eating, and make sure they don’t get into any food that could be harmful, like chocolate, grapes, onions, or alcohol. Keep trash securely covered as well.

Exercise Early

Give your pets plenty of exercise earlier in the day before the festivities begin. A tired pet is generally calmer and less likely to get anxious during the evening's events.

Keep Them Occupied

Provide your pets with toys and activities to keep them occupied and distracted. Puzzle toys filled with treats or long-lasting chews can be great for this.

Calming Aids

Have a supply of calming aids such as CBD or Hemp treats or chews on hand. Pawtree has a several great products to get you ready for the 4th of July. Keep 'em Calm - For Small & Medium Breeds - pawTree

Stay Calm

Pets can pick up on our emotions. Try to stay calm and relaxed, as your pet will take cues from your behavior. If you’re calm, they’re more likely to be calm as well.

Avoid Fireworks

Never use fireworks around pets. Even sparklers and smaller fireworks can pose a danger to curious pets. Keep them far away from any fireworks displays.

Monitor for Signs of Stress

Be aware of signs that your pet is stressed, such as panting, pacing, whining, or hiding. If you notice these behaviors, comfort them and consider moving them to their safe space.

By taking these precautions, we can ensure that our pets stay safe and feel secure during the July 4th celebrations. Let’s enjoy the holiday while keeping our furry family members happy and healthy!

Stay safe and have a wonderful Independence Day!
